Veteran having trouble in hearing loss

Why Now Is the Time for Veterans to Come Forward About Hearing Loss

August 29, 20252 min read

Introduction
Across the UK, thousands of former service personnel live with the hidden consequences of their time in uniform. For many, Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is more than just an inconvenience. It affects relationships, employment, and wellbeing. Until recently, many veterans assumed nothing could be done. That is changing.

Recent figures reveal a surge in claims against the Ministry of Defence (MoD). More than 13,700 hearing loss claims were submitted in the last financial year — compared with just 4,500 the year before. The MoD could now face liabilities of up to £200 million. High-value awards of £700,000 and £350,000 have already been secured for former soldiers.

For veterans, this isn’t just a statistic. It is proof that action works, justice is possible, and now is the moment to step forward.

Why the Numbers Are Rising
For decades, NIHL was downplayed or ignored. Ear defenders were inadequate, training environments were deafening, and those affected often suffered in silence. Over time, however, medical evidence has become stronger, legal arguments sharper, and society more aware of the long-term impact of service-related hearing loss.

This growing recognition is why claims have more than tripled in a single year. Veterans are no longer accepting hearing damage as an unavoidable cost of service. They are demanding recognition — and the courts are listening.

What This Means for Veterans
The surge in claims shows that veterans have a stronger case than ever before. But it also shows that waiting too long can mean missing out. Those who take early action can:

·Secure compensation that reflects the real impact on daily life.

·Access funds for hearing aids, therapy, or adjustments at work.

·Gain recognition that their sacrifice has not been forgotten.

By contrast, those who delay may find it harder to gather evidence, locate service records, or connect their condition to service.
