Could Something Be Missing from Your Pension or Hearing Support?

6 Signs Your Pension or Hearing Loss Might Be Linked to Your Service

After years in uniform, many veterans are used to just getting on with things – even when something doesn’t feel quite right. Whether it’s with your hearing or your finances, it’s easy to put it down to age or circumstance and carry on.

But sometimes, what feels like “just one of those things” could actually be the result of poor advice, mismanagement, or long-term exposure during service – and you could be entitled to support.

Here are 6 common signs that your military pension or hearing loss could be part of a bigger issue – and worth looking into.

1. You were advised to move your Armed Forces pension into a private scheme

If someone recommended you transfer your Forces pension into a private plan – and didn’t fully explain the risks – that’s a red flag. Especially if the adviser was paid a commission or your new pension lacks the same guarantees or protections.

2. You don’t fully understand where your pension is or what it’s worth

Many veterans who’ve been mis-sold a pension only realise years later that they’re unsure what they actually have. If your pension documents are confusing, inconsistent, or missing key information, it’s worth asking someone to take a proper look.

3. You now rely on subtitles, hearing aids, or “just nod along” in conversations

If your hearing has declined noticeably since your time in service, it could be due to noise exposure – not just age. Repeated exposure to gunfire, aircraft, or machinery can cause Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL), often gradually over time.

4. You weren’t given proper hearing protection during your service

Whether in training or active duty, many veterans report that they were given little to no hearing protection – or that it wasn’t suitable for the environment. If that sounds familiar, and you now have tinnitus or reduced hearing, your service may be the cause.

5. You feel something’s “off” with your pension but don’t know where to start

Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right – like the value of your pension seems low, or you’re struggling to access information – that’s exactly the kind of thing we and our legal partners can help you check.

6. You were told “there’s nothing you can do about it”

If you’ve previously raised concerns and been dismissed, you’re not alone. But don’t let that stop you. In many cases, claims are possible even if the original adviser or company has since shut down.
